Family Law Part 8 – Paternity Tests

Attorney in Raleigh NC |  Paternity Tests

Determining a biological child-father relationship is done by genetic fingerprinting. Referred to as a paternity test, this type of test can offer genetic proof of whether or not a man is the biological father of an individual.
A far less common test that can be conducted to determine a biological child-parent relationship is called a maternity test. A maternity test can determine whether or not a woman is the biological mother of an individual.
In addition to genetic testing, there are several other ways to determine paternity. These methods are older and less common, but are able to be used, if needed. Other testing includes:

  • Analysis of various proteins and enzymes
  • ABO Blood Group Typing
  • Human Leukocyte Antigen Antigens

The standard, most reliable method, of genetic testing uses polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism to determine the results.
Though the most common way to determine paternity is through an individual out of the womb, it is now possible to perform a genetic paternity test while a baby is still in the womb. This is done by drawing blood from the baby that is yet unborn.
